Thanks, but as noted in my first post, I've tried putting the query in a parfile and I'm sure the shell quoting is not a problem.
I've been able to fix the problem with some off-list advice (thanks!) -- when using the impdp QUERY parameter, if you include a schema qualifier in the query impdp incorrectly assumes you're using the SCHEMAS parameter. I've worked around this by adding a synonym for the relevant table in my source database.
