Don't assume.

Read the docs, setup a test environment, and test until you understand how it works.

Reading the docs is good, but until you accompany that with actual hands on testing, you will not understand what you are doing.

And if you do not understand the implementation of RMAN in your environment, you will eventually find yourself in a position where you have lost a database, and either have no working backup at all, or find yourself forced to use a backup that causes data loss.
