Try to install initial RHEL5 ( not Updates ) but WITHOUT upgrading the kernel after install. The base kernel have the LD_ASSUME_KERNEL available, but later ones ( iirc >= 2.6.11 or so ) eliminated the old kernel threading ( 2.4 ) support
