I was in a presentation at OpenWorld about new RAC features in 11gR2, and the presenter (whose name I cannot recall) emphasized that SCAN is not optional, it is mandatory. The optional part is the GNS where RAC manages the server names for you and the DNS forwards the resolving to the GNS.
