ORA-007445 issue in HP/UX

If you ever run into this issue, can you share the work around?
Oracle 9iR2 9.2.0.8.0
Symtom: select count(*) from table_name returns 0; but if SGA buffer is flushed, it returns number of records.
Sorry, other than this, I do not have any detail info. (I am trying to help someone out.)
Currently, they have a script to scan alert log. Whenever it sees
ORA-007445, it flushes the buffer.
Is there any other better work around. (Oracle supports say it's a bug but
they do not fix it anymore in 9i.)
