It turns out the problem was due to incorrect permissions on the backup files. Once I corrected them, everything was fine.

I must say, that was not the first thing that came to mind when I saw the error message :-).

creating datafile file number=1 name=+DATA/rac21d/datafile/system. 259.682280555

RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-00569: =============== ERROR MESSAGE STACK FOLLOWS ===============
RMAN-00571: ===========================================================
RMAN-03002: failure of restore command at 08/18/2009 03:20:17 ORA-01180: can not create datafile 1
ORA-01110: data file 1: '+DATA/rac21d/datafile/system.259.682280555'

How hard would it have been to have a message like 'No backup files found' or something like that?

Thanks to all for your help.

Steve
