if you have 8 disks, which will include os installation also, then my recommendation:-
- 2, RAID 1 for os

• 2, RAID 1 for redo logs
• 4, RAID 0+1 or 1+0 for data and rest

I prefer separating sequential wites in redologs to different disks, very important performance indicator as your transactions increase.

If this particular database is some sort of data warehouse, you can even consider raid5 for data.

Note, apart from no of disks, it would be a big relief to understand these disks will be under how many controllers, trays, cache, stripe width/size, type etc. Etc. This will also help you understand the way i/o will be performed and take a more informed decision.

Hey all,

If you had 8 disks in a server what would you do? From watching this list I can see alot of people using RAID 5 but i'm wary of the performance implicatons. (http://www.miracleas.com/BAARF/)

I was thinking maybe RAID 5 (3 disks) for the OS, software and backups. RAID 10 (4 disks + 1 hot spare) for the database files.

Any thoughts?
