Oracle 10 client sql worksheet and _JAVA_OPTIONS

A 3rd party piece of software I have installed sets _JAVA_OPTIONS. Now my Oracle 10 client sql worksheet does not work. It starts up but as soon as I do anything in the window Worksheet just closes.  

I have worked around this by createing a bat file that unsets _JAVA_OPTIONS and then runs worksheet.  

But is there a better solution?
