By the way, if you ever want to get a full appreciation of the immensity and complexity of what the Oracle CBO does in that .3 seconds of hard parse time, try running a 10053 trace and then take a week off to read through the output (you might want to have a look at Wolfgang Breitling's whitepaper first).
