IF you have to patch one instance and not apply that patch to all of them, then you can create a new Oracle_Home at that time. But in my experience if you have to patch one, you need to patch them all as they all suffer from the same flaw.

The point about clustering and patching is well-taken, though. What do you do if you need to patch one instance separately from the others, for whatever reason?

Sounds like a SAP installation to me. Tell consultant to go fly a kite. One set of binaries, 5 instances out of the same home. No options.
