There's a little more than that in the whitepaper at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/pdf/asm_10gr2_bestpractices%2009-07.pdf.
On page 12, it says:
When a diskgroup becomes mounted, ASM registers the diskgroup name, the instance name, and the
corresponding Oracle Home path name with Cluster Synchronization Services (CSS). This registered data
is then used by the database instance to build the TNS connect string. This string is subsequently used by
the database instance to connect into the ASM instance for volume management activities. This is
discussed in the Database Instance Section.
There's some more info on page 16. It isn't in-depth internals, but it's better than the one-liner you've found so far.
Incidentally, that paper's author, Nitin Vengurlekar, is probably the foremost expert on ASM that I've ever met. He's written or collaborated on many of the technical documents you'll find at http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/asm/index.html

Hi,
Does any one have details note/white paper which describe use of CSS(Cluster Synchronization Services ) in Non-RAC ASM instance. i went thru a ASM book and few Metalink notes but did not get much datails other than everywhere its written that
"CSS daemon process is required to enable synchronization between Oracle ASM and database instances. It must be running if an Oracle database is using ASM for database file storage. "
Can anyone point any note/white paper which describe use of CSS in non-RAC ASM instance.
