I just reviewed the Metalink note you referenced and it doesn't seem to
make any mention of hanging the database, only hanging sqlplus, netca,
dbca. I also found a related note - 4612267.8 - that says the problem
affects all OCI clients. Note 338461.1 also seems to indicate that the
problem is on Linux only, but 4612267.8 says it affects all platforms
and there are patches available for HPUX and AIX too, and the patches
are for the "Oracle Server (CORE)", not just the instant client.

I've hit this bug before.
However, you said the database was unresponsive. This bug only affects clients using instant client 10.2.0.1. The DB itself is fine. You said rman was unresponsive as well, which is not part of instant client?!

This was the issue. We were at precisely 248 days of uptime, and it was the
first time the box was allowed to run that long uninterrupted.
Thank you kindly, all, for the help!
