8.1.7 is not "ooooooooold crap" It is still quite respectable.
The ORA-1460 error is coming from your Recovery Catalog.
If you are using a Recovery Catalog, RMAN queries and updates the Catalog
in the same manner as any normal SQL queries and updates to an
Application Schema.
The RMAN catalog is nothing but a schema inside a database instead of
structures inside a controlfile.
Find out why the Catalog returns ORA-1460. Did you convert from 32bit to 64bit ? (is the RMAN client one side and the Catalog running a different size) ? See Bug#5945072 for clues.
OR are you using differing NLS character sets ?
Trace your RMAN session in the Catalog database. Lookup MetaLink for ORA-1460 errors.
