"InterSystems Caché® is the high-performance object database that runs SQL five times faster than relational databases." (their claim, not mine - see http://www.intersystems.com/cache/) Other parts of their site quote 5, 10, 15 and even 20 times faster than "tradtional" database systems.

So you don't have to stick to MUMPS, you can use SQL. But yes, you still need skills in Caché and its tools...

Epic systems applications, mostly used in healthcare industry, use cache database. For instance, kaiser permanente uses cache for medical record management. There is no SQL equivalent in that database; but it got MUMPS language. You need different set of skills there.
