Are you also backing up the archived logs or not?
I am not sure, even if the FRA deletes the older files to make a room for the new one, it will be a valid delete(archived logs) or not for the RMAN.
Why dont you backup the archived logs with compressed option and leave the backupsets in FRA (or make backup to tape).?
