DB link testing

We use DB links here to connect databases for information exchange. the time has come to test the existing links [created by various users] to see which ones are still working and which aren't. before i continue to recreate the wheel, does anyone have such a procedure they're willing to share? or pointers to code segments that might save me some time in writing same?
