Hi Neil,
on my Unix server, the 9i oracle binary file (named oracle) contains the string "Oracle9i Enterprise Edition Release %d.%d.%d.%d.%d - 64bit Production" whereas the standard has "Oracle9i Release %d.%d.%d.%d.%d - 64bit Production". I don't suppose you have grep on your Windows server?
