Text Indexing and Oracle

We are currently using Oracle Text to index our full-text documents and the metadata for those documents. We are finding that this may not be the solution because of the problems that we are having maintaining these indexes, mainly optimizing these indexes. We are looking at Lucene as a possible replacement. However, we are doing research to see what other products are out there that can be used for Text indexing. Is anyone indexing full-text documents? If so, what solution are you using?
