In the past I've tended to go with the old client until required for some
reason to upgrade it. Reasons for upgrade I've encountered.
In nearly all cases I've found upgrading clients an extremely problematic exercise.
In addition if you are on Windows clients then make sure that the environment (the PATH and CLASSPATH) is set correctly. Multiple OH can occasionally cause conflicts on this platform (though to be fair I've only recently seen this running 2 db versions and 3 app server installs on the same laptop :) )
