were you running as SYSTEM by any chance?

I have just create a context index on one of my test tables and it happily went into my default tablespace, well the various SYS_ILxxxxxx indexes did, the main index itself has no tablespace. I created the index while logged in as my own user BTW, not as another one.

Also, if something of the index is created under CTXSYS what is the default tablespace for that schema too.
