p3 parameter in "direct path read"

Folks,


Does anyone know how Oracle computes value for the p3 parameter during
direct path reads? It seems that this is not directly governed by the
MRBC setting because in my raw trace file, with MRBC set to 8, I am
seeing this value as high as 31.
