I don't agree with the majority of respondents to the list who like to use the exp/imp method to upgrade their databases. Why, in the absence of real necessity, would one completely unload and reload their data, rather than just running the upgrade script? Most of the reasons cited have nothing to do with an upgrade, and should really be regarded as separate issues. Trying to throw in other tasks alongside an upgrade is just a recipe for instability.

Among the reasons cited were:

I guess I am puzzled by the eagerness so many have for unloading and completely reloading their data, when all they really need to do is run Oracle's upgrade script. I am equally puzzled by the desire to bundle up major changes like an upgrade and an O/S change or DMT to LMT. Why not do complicated things one at a time? How will you tell which thing you did caused the horrible bug you find yourself battling after the outage?
