Ok. What does "hang" really mean? What does V$SESSION_WAIT say? Did you locate the accessing process? Did you try with strace/truss? Did you try dumping process and system states and ask Oracle Corp. to investigate, the process known as "opening a TAR"? When you say that process hangs, does it look like this?
