Greetings Bill.
Personally, I think the documentation says it all: http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/install.102/b14203/storage.h tm#sthref838
"If you intend to use Automatic Storage Management for database storage for Linux, then Oracle recommends that you install the ASMLIB driver and associated utilities, and use them to configure candidate disks"
With RAC it is always best to follow the beaten path and recommendations are certainly there to be followed.
There is another (small) section 3.6.4 stating that you can configure ASM with raw devices directly (i.e. no asmlib) if you wish.
If you choose the recommended path, the installation guide is really rather good on the order of what is required, broadly:

Subject: Questions re ASMLib on Linux
Greetings,
I am working with Oracle 10gR2 (10.2.0.3.0) on a two node RAC cluster running on Linux RHEL3. My questions...
1)Is ASMLib required?
2)If so must one configure the disks prior to creating the ASM instance
or will the DBCA take care of that?
If it is not required what are the advantages of using it?
Thanks.
