Somehow I was under the impression that the read media was RAID5, though the email clearly stated you are backing up *to* RAID5.

Yes, that may be somewhat slower than RAID0, RAID1, RAID10 and even JBOD.

Look on the bright side - if it were RAID6 it would be even slower.
