Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Backing up RMAN catalog database
Alan,
I'm remembering old documentation. I'm sure now that with 10g where they are suggesting that an Rman catalog is no longer needed that there are better ways to do this.
The second Rman catalog can use the 1st Rman catalog for it's backup purposes.
All I said was that the 2nd Rman catalog is used only for the Rman database.
There are a lot of ways to skin an Oracle cat around here. Pick your preferred method.
Tom

Subject: RE: Backing up RMAN catalog database
Tom, where have you seen a 2nd rman catalog suggested by Oracle? That seems like overkill to me, plus then what would you do to backup your 2nd rman catalog - use a 3rd catalog, and then a 4th for that one and so on?
The documentation I've seen suggests to use the recovery catalog database's control file as the rman repository instead. The below link even says specfically "Do not use another recovery catalog as the repository for the backups.":

The traditional (Oracle suggested) way is to have a second Rman catalog
on a different database server. This catalog is used by the first Rman
database.
