Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Backing up RMAN catalog database
We use the RMAN daily export method ... set up by a contractor a couple
years earlier. But this database is not in archive log mode. Should it
be? My thinking is yes, because otherwise rman backups (eg. archived
log files) since the last export of the recovery catalog may not be
recoverable by RMAN.

Fred,
The traditional (Oracle suggested) way is to have a second Rman catalog on a different database server. This catalog is used by the first Rman database.
Another way is to simply export the Rman catalog when no backups are running and save the export file someplace safe.
Either way works as long as it is documented.

Subject: Backing up RMAN catalog database
Hello
I am curious how those of you that use an RMAN catalog go about backing
it
up.
I'm running Netbackup 5.1MP7 and backup 5 databases to a master server.
My
rman catalog database is on a separate server. Do you backup the catalog
database to the same master server?
Do you simply connect with the target being the rman catalog (and no
connection to a catalog database)?
Are there any issues with backing up the catalog database to the same
master
server?
Thanks!
