Michael,

The other thing that might have confused you is that for some of us who didn't want the licensing fees and aggravation of an MML would back up to disk, then once the backup utility had copied those files to tape, would delete them from disk. Naturally, that wasn't an Oracle feature and in a recovery situation, would have to restore the files from tape back to the disk location that RMAN was expecting them.
