really good article a few years ago on OTN about it, and I can't find it now. but the above link is a quick summary.
the nice thing is that these tools support independence/specialization. you can just as easily read in the existing db model and map it to your own objects as you can generate the less than optimized model based on your application's single object viewpoint.

When designing tables for use by your application, do you include foreign keys in your design, or do you prefer to handle the logic within the application?
Please, DO NOT ALLOW JAVA DEVELOPER to get even close to data modelling. If you do then he must qualify as data modeller as such. This discipline has nothing to do with Java.
