It is a pretty significant event, at least in 9i. Full table lock while a 
full table scan is performed. I had this happen to me on a 240GB partitioned 
table. The whole database completely bogged down. So, after that I just 
marked columns as unused. Downside is exports can only be in conventional 
mode.
