It might explain it if sys and system were connecting with the
oracle_sid set. The connection then would not use sqlnet, but either an
ipc or beq connection - memory to memory. Was the connection made on
the database server itself?

That doesn't explain why SYS and SYSTEM were fast (instant !).
Or were you using different Unix accounts (eg "oracle" for "sys" and
"system"
but another account , even if or not in the "dba" group, for other
database accounts) ?
