ROLEs came in Oracle7 (not Oracle6, I think). Prior versions had "CONNECT", "RESOURCE" and "DBA" as the 3 System Privileges. ie "CONNECT" was a privilege.

Once ROLEs were implemented, _with_ specific System Privileges,   "CONNECT", "RESOURCE" and "DBA" were created as ROLEs, for "backward compatibility" {eg application scripts that ran "GRANT CONNECT TO .." instead of
"CREATE USER .. GRANT CREATE SESSION"} At 03:35 PM Wednesday, Alex Gorbachev wrote:
