Are you sure that the 'sql' alias was being executed and that the
current working directory wasn't just getting set to the same value by
some other means? What if you try changing the sql alias to something
else like 'date >> /tmp/sql_logfile.txt' - then see if it gets executed?

I spoke to the DBA who put it into the .profile and she just did it so she could get to her scripts easily without having to remember where they were on each server.
