The best way to check if an instance is up and running is to connect to it. If connection is not successful, report the specific Oracle error encountered. Checking for pmon or smon and a listener process is not good enough. What if archive log area is full? ORA-257 What if the audit destination is full? ORA-9817 Always attempt connection to check if database instance is available.

SGADEF has been obselete since at least 8i.

hi all,

I have a question (may sound silly to some of you) :

what are the different ways of checking if an oracle instance is up and running or not?
what is the use of "sgadef" file and what is the location of this file on unix box? If this file is supported in oracle 8i and later or not?
