With new versions, there is no such thing as a "smooth upgrade". CBO is the principal culprit.

Actually, there is a bullet with a rather high percentage of silver: setting optimizer_index_* & first_rows_n parameters. That will get you session wide emulation of RBO. As for the system statistics, running 10g without it is a felony. They should make a constitutional amendment baning that.
