Don, Oracle supports VLAN's and dedicated switches for
the interconnect. However it is highly recommended to
use dedicated switches if possible.
The problems I have seen with VLAN's is configuration issues. I saw a problem with one customer where the CoLo was routing the packets to a city 100 miles on a private VLAN. A dedicated switch guarantees somethings with a private interconnect.
