Slow create LMT - Oracle or Disk

9.2.0.5 Tru64 5.1b

I'm creating a LMT, uniform extents & ASSM with multiple 2Gb files. File 1 was created in under 1 minute but it's gone downhill from there with files 5 - 8 taking an hour or more. 'ps' shows the process is using 99+ percent of one CPU but otherwise, this is an idle system. V$session_wait shows event "async disk IO". Should I be looking for an Oracle bug or a system problem. Thanks for any insight.
