We use AIX 5.2L and I have been using "export SQLPATH=$HOME/ora:$HOME"
for a couple of releases, 8.1.7 - 10.1.0.4, without a problem.

In unix set the ORACLE_PATH environment variable to the directory(ies) of your sql scripts.
