multiple oraInventory directories

If you manage your installs with mulitple oraInventory dirs, where do you put these dirs? Any reason not to put them in the associated ORACLE_HOME? Also, is there an environment variable to point to virtual /etc/oraInst.loc files? Looks like vi or mv is the answer there. This is fubar:
