Heck of a time with NLS

I am trying to set up a new 9.2 database that uses UTF8, on a server that already has Oracle 8.1.7 that uses US7ASCII. Both on a Sun box.  

I am having a &%$@ of a time getting the thing to work so I won't get export errors.  

Can anyone point me to a paper or give me the lowdown on what parameters go where?  

I need everything from database create NLS parameters, to environment and import/export parameters.
