init<SID>.ora needed during upgradation?

Hi All,
Want to know if init<SID>.ora needs to be there in order to upgrade to 10g from 9i DB? My 9i DB has SPFILE. When I am upgrading it is saying unable to identify control file. But when I create a pfile and then run the upgrade the upgrade runs smoothly.
Any pointers.........?
