Debian vendor? I thought that Debian vendor is FSF (GNU)? Who should I ask for? Stallman or Raymond? I'm sure that something like "Richie, your distro is not recognizing my FireWire card, whadda I do?" would eventually lead to problem resolution.

I am an Oracle DBA. I use Oracle to pay the bills. Yes, I am dependent upon it. I used to depend on VAX/VMS but since the demise of DEC, I am using various versions of Unix: SCO, AIX, Solaris, HP-UX and Linux. My favorite one is HP-UX. I don't know much about Debian. They haven't motivated me to learn it, so I am blissfully ignorant of them. I prefer it to stay that way.

Why should I care about it? RH is definitely the most popular commercial distro and is definitely supported by Oracle.

One of the two most popular RPM distros. No medal for the second place.

Oh yes! I was a proud user of SuSE 8.0 and I am also a proud owner of OpenSound Software
commercial license. That means that I paid for license. I installed the software, and it
didn't work, as SuSE was usin a non-standard version string, unrecognized by OSS. I called
SuSE support and asked them to help me change the version string. SuSE support guy was a prick
who told me that
a) Relinking kernel is for gurus only and I shouldn't do it, because I don't strike
him as a guru.
b) That ALSA is the way to go and that I should use ALSA and forget my application, the one
that I have paid for.
I kindly thanked him for his help and informed him that he is a prick and that both he and SuSE should eff themselves. He was a bit unclear about the "prick" part as his English wasn't very good but I believe that I did an excellent job with a very thorough explanation. I could hear his face redden over the phone. Needless to say, I will never use SuSE again.
