Anyone to start using RMAN,  the best thing in my view is to start with
famous metalink note
Getting Started with Server-Managed Recovery (SMR) and RMAN
50875.1
The note is for older version and is not updated but it does provide a very good explanation of RMAN concepts ( backup set, backup piece , retention , catalog, record_keep_time importance and various reporting functionalities etc )
 
Further
It is better from 9i onwards to configure controlfile autobackup on rather than manually taking the backup of controlfile
(neways in recent version ( >= 9i ) controlfile  is always backed up when you take backup of file1 ...system datafile)
