Re: archiving an old 8.1.7 db + binaries on dvd - "instant server"?

This is very interesting topic, because I think most of us would like to create some db archives that could be available offline.

Some time ago I was experimenting with 9i on windows, by setting data files attributes to read-only, and trying to open database in readonly state (alter database open read only), but unfortunately Oracle was still trying to open temp tablespaces files in read/write mode (this sound very logical), so my experiments failed and I decided to wait a bit and switch to another tasks, because besides temp tablespace there is a plenty of files that Oracle will try to open in read/write mode: different log files, control file, redo logs, etc.

I think that you might consider keeping a copy of VMWare virtual machine files on dvd's and open it from VMWare, but this will not solve readonly issues and you will have to purchase VMWare for all the PC's you intend to run this database.
