9205 export error

Has anyone encountered direct export on 9205 db that failes with exp-56 and ora-942 ??

I don't see any version specific references in metalink, but one workaround suggested that NLS_LANG should be set in the shell. That didn't work for us, but removing direct=y did export succesfully.
