Thanks for the reply. I believe Windows does not let you delete a file opened for read/write by another process. Try it on a test db.

Also, lets assume that you don't have access to some of these utilities.

Digging a little deeper into Metalink, I found this note <246325.1> which discusses a recovery scenario described in my original post but it uses RMAN and Oracle 10g.

I'm assuming pre-10g and no RMAN.
