I have to admit that I didn't look closely at the sql. I went by the assumption that the purpose of the test was to find the faster of two semantically equivalent solutions. If that is not the case, then what is the point of the comparison. You have to go with the solution which gives the correct answer rather than the one that gives some answer faster.
