Upgrading 8.1.7.4 database directly to 10g on Sun Solaris

Has anyone out there done an upgrade from 8.1.7.4 to 10g on Sun Solaris?
Also, I plan on changing my character set from UTF8 to AL32UTF8.  Has anyone
simply altered the database to change the character set or did you have to
do export/import to upgrade?
