rman incremental backups vs. full backups

I believe I read somewhere that you should only take 1 full backup ever. I can't remember where. I just took an RMAN class from Oracle. The instructor said that she does not agree with this. If you have too many incrementals it increases the amount of time it takes to recover. What are some strategies that you use?
