9i upgrade os question

I have sun solaris 5.6 running 8.1.7.3. Certification matrix states 9i is
certified on 2.6. Is this the same as 5.6. I'm thinking I should force the
os upgrade first to 9 but because our version of veritas is so outdated we
would have to wipe out all the disks. So big downtime and therefore might be
forced to run on 5.6.
